The Hunt For Red October
was Tom Clancy’s debut
novel which also
propelled his name to
writing stardom. The
novel follows the story of
Soviet submarine captain
Marko Aleksandrovich
Ramus and Jack Ryan, an
ex-Marine and CIA
analyst, as
Aleksandrovich attempts
to defect to the US due to
multiple reasons,
including the death of his
wife, and the various political inefficiencies of the Soviet
government.
The way the story is written has generated much intrigue as
Jack Ryan utilises all his resources in order to help
Aleksandrovich and the crew of the Red October escape from
being chased by the Soviet army, the most amazing of
manoeuvres being to detonate a decommissioned ballistic
missile submarine in order to trick the Soviets into thinking
that the Red October was destroyed.
Tom Clancy is famous for having recurring characters and
some form of continuity from various novels. Jack Ryan in
particular is a central character in quite a number of his other
novels, and the story of what happened to the Red October
during its final days was explained in The Cardinal of Kremlin.
