Of course, the Heuristic Algorithmic sentient computer in
Arthur C. Clarke’s 2001 is fictional, but after decades of
being promised that true artificial intelligence was just
around the corner, we now could be coming to a new age of AI.
Thanks to their huge databases of web searches, messages
and emails, Internet giants like Google, Microsoft and Apple
have enough stored on human behaviour to build impressive AI
tools for voice recognition, natural language processing and
machine translation. We’re still nowhere close to AI’s holy grail -
creating computers that can learn on their own and are able to
understand the world around them.
What’s missing is an architecture to mimic the brain’s way of
handling information. The typical human brain with a few billion
neurons and a trillion
connecting synapses is a
massively parallel biological
computer where processing,
storage and networking are all
combined. A child can go from
a squealing new-born to a
walking toddler in the space of
a year with only minimal
programming (teaching, in
other words) as the brain
absorbs information,
recognises old and new
patterns and rewires itself to
suit the stimuli.
A typical computer, on the
other hand, consists of some
general-purpose CPU cores and
a few hundred simpler GPU
cores running at very high
speed to do operations
sequentially. Storage and
networking are handled by
separate modules and the programming is fixed by human
developers. A person would take ages to calculate values in a
spreadsheet whereas a computer can do it almost instantly, but
the fastest supercomputers having tens of thousands of cores
are still no match for even a mouse brain’s 100 million neurons.
