An important tip for using ReWire, is to build some templates, so once you’ve
configured your inputs and outputs, you don’t have to reinvent the wheel every
time. You can save a Logic file to keep on your computer, and the same with a
Live set, or you can go a bit more hardcore and save your Live set as a template,
using Save Current Set as Default in Live’s File/Folder Preferences, 7then save
the Logic project as a template, using File/Save as template 8– then it’ll
appear amongst the other templates in Logic’s start-up window, or when you
choose File/New from template. The next level above that is to use Automator,
which is installed on every Mac, to create a little application with a workflow that
opens both files on one click (it’s very easy to work with Automator, and it will
probably start giving you ideas about other cool things you can use it for). You
can add this to the dock like any other application. A small but very cool
timesaver which is great if you use a ReWire set-up every day. If you’re
wondering whether it’s possible to record Live’s audio directly into Logic, well,
yes it is. Route the aux track’s output to a buss that isn’t being used by anything
else, then have an audio track that’s set to record in from that buss 9.
ReWire Drawbacks
ReWire is a brilliant way to get two music
applications perfectly in sync, and it creates a
very powerful music system. However, there are
little inconveniences and challenges along the
way. When running as a ReWire slave, Live can
only use the native instrument and effect
devices; any third party plug-ins in your project
will be disabled, you’ll get a message reminding
you of this. There’s also an issue with using
MIDI hardware controllers; MIDI controllers have
to be routed to Live through Logic, which is
inconvenient at best, and makes Push unusable!
It’s definitely worth it
The original reason that people used to ReWire Live with Logic, in previous
versions, was because it was considered that Live didn’t have such good audio
quality as Logic. This was probably true in the past, and Logic was certainly
more advanced in terms of mastering tools. One thing to remember, though, is
that whenever anybody talks about comparing the audio quality of different
pieces of software, you have to be careful to compare like-for-like. Comparing
something that was warped in Live with an unwarped track from Logic is not
realistic. Both programs have had major updates recently, and I believe they
both sound better than ever. They do
sound different, though, and I think
that’s part of the ‘quality’ issue. We
get used to the sound of a particular
thing, and our ears tend to get
acclimatised. Then when something
new comes along, our ears perk up a
bit… “Oh, what’s this?” The grass is
always greener.
So, that motivation to ReWire isn’t
there anymore, but the advantages of
combining the two best DAWs around
make it more useful and exciting than
ever. It’s good to have more than one
DAW, it keeps everything in perspective
and rounds out your skill set and
feature set. If you can’t do it with
Live 9 and Logic Pro X, then you’re
never going to be able to do it!
