cameras, infrared headlights and radar systems in the new
S-Class. Together, they enable semi-autonomous driving
(“Intelligent Drive”). 1 A camera and a radar sensor are
fitted in the radiator grill and they are almost invisible. There
are also stereo cameras on the inside the front windscreen,
which also helps to detect transverse traffic. 2 In dangerous
situations, the S-Class is able to brake automatically, stop,
start and correct steering errors. The automatic vehicle
interval control “Distronic Plus” maintains a specific
maximum speed depending on the distance from the vehicle
ahead. A new feature is that the S-Class car can automatically
maintain its speed up to 130 km/h. On a highway, all this
almost works as if the vehicle were running on auto-pilot. A
night vision device also indicates people and animals on the
road by using a large combination of instruments and issues
a warning to the driver. In the future, the S-Class will be so
self-sufficient that it will cover entire cross-country trips or
city rides; Mercedes-Benz has already conducted such a test
drive and the S-Class passed with flying colours. 3 The
stereo camera for crosswise traffic also scans the road
sections directly in front of the car for bumps and rough
terrain. The function called “Magic Body Control” forwards
data to the “Active Body Control” in split seconds. This then
adjusts the insulation of individual wheels. As a result,
someone sitting inside the vehicle does not feel any bumps.
The Magic Body Control is active up to speeds of 130 km/h.
