As fAr As we cAn tell,Check Point is still
using Kaspersky’s antivirus engine to drive
its ZoneAlarm security products, including
ZoneAlarm 2015 Extreme Security, the topof-the-line security suite in Check Point’s
stable. Paired with the popular two-way
ZoneAlarm firewall, Check Point is able to
offer end users a nearly impenetrable perimeter of protection against various forms
of malware.
In our tests, ZA swatted away foul files
like the nuisances they are, though like
Kaspersky Internet Security 2014 (reviewed
in July 2014 issue), ZA casually waits for
dirt y downloads to reach the desktop before
zapping the nasty code. Nervous Nelsons
might prefer that downloads be blocked
from the source, though to ZA’s credit, it
didn’t let any of the malicious downloads
harm our testbed.
There’s a lot more that Check Point
cobbled together for its Extreme package, including a few new editions for the
2015 release (don’t let the year fool you, the
2015 version is available now and has been
for several months). A new Threat Emulation tool opens email attachments and web
downloads in a virtual sandbox in the cloud
to minimize the fallout of zero-day malware, and a Find My Laptop feature helps
locate lost or stolen laptops on a map via
Wi-Fi-enabled location tracking. It also allows you to lock down your notebook, send
a message to the finder (or thief), take a
webcam picture, grab a screen capture, and
retrieve and back up your files remotely. If
you’re worried about losing your notebook,
this negates the need to invest in third-party laptop-recovery software.
Threat Emulation and Find My Laptop
are exclusive to the Extreme package, and
so is a PC tune-up function that’s supposed
to speed up your PC through a four-stage
process that primarily focuses on your system registry. These types of utilities make
us uneasy because of the potential to do
harm by mucking around in the registry.
That said, ZA didn’t mess up anything after
running a tune-up, but we also didn’t notice
a speed improvement, even after correcting
supposedly numerous errors.
If these three features don’t appeal to
you, ZA Internet Security 2015 offers the
same protection for $10 less. We don’t think
the premium is worth it for the tune-up
function, though the combination of Threat
Emulation and Find My Laptop easily adds
$10 worth of value.
