We’ll admit, Natural Point’s TrackIR 5 Pro
is nothing new. That’s because it’s been
around since 2009, when our Mr. Carey
(now of Sir, You Are Being Huntedfame) reviewed this "latest" iteration of the headtracking sensor. It’s a testament to the
quality of the TrackIR that now, five years
later, it’s still a genuinely game-changing
peripheral. Its only problem is that the
price hasn’t dropped since then.
The Oculus Rift is praised for delivering immersive gaming, but the TrackIR has
been quietly putting you further into the
game for years. In fact, the latest Oculus
Rift (DK2) has just added a similar positional-tracking system to its own arsenal.
You could say that the TrackIR is almost
the poor man’s Rift in terms of immersion,
but that would be doing a disservice to the
work NaturalPoint has put into it, as well
as redefining the term "poor man."
The TrackIR works with a high-speed
infrared camera sitting atop your monitor,
tracking the relative position of your head.
It does this using either a set of reflectors
on the standard, hat-mounted TrackClip,
or the USB-powered LEDs of the headsetmounted TrackClip Pro. It has six degrees
of freedom, tracking a full range of movement of your noggin. It’s the way that’s
translated into your games that is the
smart part, though.
