The Gundam
universe of
animes is quite
probably the
largest of all
robot and sci-fi
animes. The
original
Gundam show
first started
way back in
1979 thanks to
Yoshiyuki
Tomino and
Sunrise Studio,
the company that owns the rights to the franchise. In most
Gundam shows, the plot typically revolves around a young
adult who is in the midst of a war-torn era, piloting a Gundam
unit to fight wars and attain peace.
The Gundam series is such a phenomenon for a number of
reasons. The mecha designs are much more realistic compared
to other super robot series, and these Gundam units can suffer
medium to long-term damage, and as a result, the plot
thickens until a new Gundam unit gets introduced (sometimes
almost too conveniently).
The story also revolves around various characters and their
relationship dynamics, with each series having their own epic
overarching stories that uses these “mobile suits” and wide
variety of technological advancements and warfare capabilities
to turn the tides in their favour.
While Gundams may be the main centrepiece of the story,
there are other giant mechanical robots and ships in the show
as well. These can range from your typical small fry units to
specialised mobile suits that are piloted by experts who
provide a challenge to the otherwise overpowered Gundams.
The best part about Gundams however has got to be the
fact that you get to buy and build your own scaled models,
which range from 1/144 to 1/60 scale units.
