where my mouth is - by using only mobile wireless for all
my Internet access and multimedia.
It all started when I moved to a new house that didn’t have
an existing wired broadband connection. As I was staying
there for only a few months, I didn’t see the point of getting
tied down to a two-year contract with TMNet, Time, Maxis or
some other fiber or DSL provider. I figured I could use my
existing 3G phone and plan so I
wouldn’t have to pay extra. A 3G
HSDPA downlink at over 4
megabits per second and a 2GB
data cap were deemed sufficient
for this experiment in cheapskateness.
Web surfing didn’t take up much
data, even when the phone was
tethered to my laptop, but
downloading apps, software
updates and watching streaming
video on YouTube and Vimeo killed
that 2GB limit even before the
billing cycle was halfway through.
Hey, there’s only so much free
terrestrial TV one can stand before
one starts longing for proper
channels.
